Getting your driver’s licence
Step 1 – provisional licence – you need this licence before you begin your driving lessons and you can apply for this up to two months before your 17th birthday. You can order this online or you can apply for one via post (forms supplied at your local post office).
Step 2 – lessons - once you turn 17 and have your provisional licence, you are then set to start your driving lessons. You need to now find the perfect driving school for you.
Step 3 – Theory test- You can start practising and take your theory test before you start your lessons, but you can also practise as you’re learning to drive as-well. We recommend using ‘Theory Test Pro’ website as a way to practise, but you can use books, DVD’s and mobile phone apps as well. Once you feel ready you will then book in for your Theory test with the DVLA. You take as many attempts as it takes of this test so don’t worry if you fail first time. Your Theory lasts for 2 years, which means getting stuck into your driving to pass your practical driving test before the theory runs out.
Step 4 – Practical test – Once you have passed your Theory this is a crucial time for you and your instructor to concentrate on the practical training and to get your driving up to scratch. When you and your instructor feel confident enough you will then book a practical test with the DVLA on an agreed date.
