Motorway driving -
As you cannot drive on the motorway while you are learning, all of our instructors offer motorway driving lessons to take when you pass your practical test.
In the meantime, we have come up with some pointers and tips to remember for when you do your motorway lessons.
Reflective studs – reflective circles on the road to guide you on the motorway
White reflective studs – lane separation
Green reflective studs – slip roads (road entering/leaving motorway)
Red reflective studs – hard shoulder (break down lane)
Orange reflective studs – Central reservation (barrier/land between carriageways)
The speed limit on the motorway is 70mph, however for articulated lorries the speed limit is 56mph. Take care when lorries are overtaking or if you are overtaking lorries.
Count down markers
At every junction there are markers counting down to the exit. There are three different marker signs leading up to the junction;
blue with 3 white slanting lines – resembles 300 yards until exit
blue with 2 white slanting lines – resembles 200 yards until exit
blue with 1 white slanting line – resembles 100 yards until exit
300 yards seems like a long way in walking pace but remember, at 70mph it will come around a lot sooner than you may think. Be on the look out for your exit but make sure to keep your eyes on the road and drive safely.
Fill up on fuel before going on the motorway.You may not come across many service stations on your travels.
Make sure you have break down cover. If you do break down, make sure that you know where you are before calling the emergency services. If you don’t know where you are there are emergency phones every mile with markers every 100 yards directing you to the nearest phone. These phones instantly tell the control centre where you are.
When leaving the motorway, ease off your gas before you leave the inside lane. Then break gradually as soon as you are on the slip road. You need to drop your speed down a lot as when you get to the end of the slip road the speed limit will decrease quite a lot.
