Sleepy drivers

It is VERY important to make sure you are not at risk of falling asleep at the wheel. Even a couple of seconds drifting off can cause major accidents on the road! Things can change drastically within one second at 70mph. What to do to prevent tiredness while driving;

1. If you have a long journey a head of you, make sure you get a lot of sleep the night before

2. Avoid any alcohol before the journey, even small amounts can make you tired

3. Take regular breaks, every 2 hours of driving take 15 minutes rest

4. Drink coffee, but it takes 20 minutes to kick in. Maybe stop off at a service station with a coffee for 20 minutes.

5. Avoid heavy meals before and during the journey- eat properly but not too much

6. If you can share long journeys with another driver and alternate driving and resting

7. Schedule an over night stop if you have a very long journey ahead

8. Turn the heating down in the car and open windows if you begin to feel tired

Mobiles – kill the call, not yourself

TOP TIP – download an app which puts your messages on hold while driving! OR switch it off

Penalties

If you get caught on your phone while driving it is an automatic 6 points on your licence plus a £200 fine. The penalty is the same if you drive badly while using your hands free, remember this would cause your licence to be taken off you within the first 2 years of driving!

Fact – at 70mph your car travels the length of six double decker buses every two seconds!

One look at your phone for a second could cause you your life

How to check your tyres

You need to check your tyres regularly especially before a long journey. What do I need to check?

Make sure your tyres are cold before doing these checks

Park your car on level ground and make sure it is secure

Check all the way round each tyre for damage such as cuts, bulges, nails or screws

Apply hand break
